Drinking
Water Services are aware
that an increasing number of organisations
have a requirement for security of water
supply.
This of course complements
having standby generators and perhaps an
alternative communication system, landlines
and mobile phones.
We have been involved in
a number of discrete contracts which have
involved developing private water supplies
in locations that in practice are well served
with mains water and sewerage services. However
our customers have identified a need for
security and autonomy of their water supply
in the event of certain incidents, over and
above a stock of bottled water.
These organisations have
decided that they must be able to operate
under the broadest range of circumstances,
work mustn't be brought to a standstill due
to the inability to flush a toilet!
Following the invasion
of Kuwait in 1991 when Sir Michael Weston,
the British Embassador to Kuwait decided
to remain in post, he and his remaining
staff ultimately had to drink water from
the embassy swimming pool. But for the
presence of the pool, this stand against
the occupation would have been impossible.
Our services include reviewing
current water supply systems and proposing
optimum supply regimes based on the property,
volume required, likely numbers of people
using the supply and the length of time that
an independent supply should function.
These recommendations might
include developing a borehole or well, or
even refurbishing an existing borehole or
well along with the installation of the relevant
treatment works to ensure the water is safe
and drinkable.

The added bonus is that
with the right system and supply, it can
be possible to significantly reduce the use
of mains water and have a system that pays
for itself.

Three new criteria are to be included
in a revised Fire Services Act
due by the end of this year.
Civil Emergencies
High Volume Pumping
Civil Resilience.
In the event of 9/11 type event,
the Fire Service become responsible
for over-ground water supply via
high volume line pump sets. These
are totally new units and additional
to existing kit, with two outputs
8m3/min and 23m3/min. The water is
perceived to be available from a
separate quality zone or adjacent
water company. There will be up to
10km of pipe on call. |
