River Darent
The effects of 2 successive dry
winters are taking their toll on the flow in the
river Darent.
It
is running at an exceptionality low level and is being
augmented by the Environment Agency abstracting from
boreholes along the valley within the local area. This
has proved necessary because otherwise the river would
already have dried up.
The western catchment has only received approximately
60% of the long term average rainfall and aquifer recharge
has been correspondingly poor. Recent rainfall has been
very welcome, however no further recharge will occur
until the autumn as plants and trees will now absorb
the summer precipitation.

out to alleviate low flow in the river Darent.

Canterbury City Council
MKW and Canterbury City Council are working closely together
to overcome the worst impacts of the drought on flower displays and recreational
use. Utilisation of a private borehole source and re-cycling grey water will
allow the displays and facilities to flourish, whilst drought restrictions
are imposed elsewhere.
The key to gaining public understanding comes from a joint PR campaign highlighting
the environmental benefits.
Commercial Business Plumbing Surveys
A series of plumbing surveys have been undertaken for
key customers following an initial drought discussion
consultation. The activity is offered to those businesses
with high nightline or unaccounted for consumption.
Results to date indicate that
many systems are not operating efficiently or indeed
the way that they were designed to work. This is particularly
noticeable with respect to urinal controls, which unless
PIR operated often waste excessive volumes of water.
Softening or specific
quality requirements is another area where efficiencies
can be low, particularly associated with the backwash
facility.
Perhaps the major issue is the lack of sub metering,
which would allow far better understanding of where the
water is being used.

Water Scarcity – Folkestone & Dover Water
Company
The Secretary of State for the Environment
announced in March the decision to award Water
Scarcity Status to Folkestone and Dover Water Services:
Folkestone & Dover Water Services (FDWS) argued
that its area is the driest in England and Wales, and
it had considered a number of options for reducing
demand in its area. It also demonstrated that
a metering campaign in the early nineties had a significant
impact on reducing demand from its customers.
As well as the pressure for development in the area,
FDWS also pointed to other factors which are likely
to maintain a high level of demand, or bring further
increases, including the delayed closure of Dungeness
Power Station, likely expansion of the Port of Dover
and a population increase with the new high speed rail
link to London.
The Water Scarcity Status is a long
term view – FDWS
already has approximately 45% of domestic properties
metered and now, with the benefit of this status, plans
to increase the number of domestic properties on meters
to 90% by 2015.
