Water Efficiency Advice

Mid Kent Water is working hard to stay in touch with its customers needs.

Business bulletin is a bi-monthly update for our key-customers, keeping you informed of the latest news from Mid Kent Water and the water industry.

In OFWATs Overall Performance Assessment for 2004/05 Mid Kent Water is now 5th equal in the league table out of all 23 water companies in England & Wales

Key Data
mid kent water

Delivers around 170,000,000 litres of water a day.
Supplies a population of 600,000.

Did you know that mid kent water offers a range of other water related services to its customers including:

Water Audit of private networks,

Operation & Maintenance of Water and Wastewater Plant,

Water Consultancy,

Fisheries Management and Consultancy?

Drought 2006

Reservoir droughtWater resourses  continue to be under stress due to lack of recharge during the autumn period. The winter period has also started poorly with cold, snowy conditions prevailing again giving little recharge benefit.

Mid Kent Water is in liaison with all neighbouring water providers and relevant organisations, co-ordinating a collective approach to the issue. Regular updates and visits will be undertaken as the situation unfolds.

As part of a desire to jointly work in improving water efficiency understanding we will be offering a 1 day visit by a plumber/audit technician. It is hoped this will offer focus to further reducing, or at least restraining growth in overall consumption.

Particular customers may also benefit from investment in storage and this will also be considered during the visit.

Please review our news feed for regular information updates.

Kent County Council

Image of kcclogoMid Kent Water (MKW) are working in partnership with the Kent County Council (KCC) to encourage understanding and awareness of the necessity to promote prudent use of the finite resource – water.

An interesting fact – 97% of the worlds’ water is saline, 2% is locked in the ice caps, 1% is available for all humanity's needs.

As part of a concerted effort to reduce leakage and wastage in schools, a benchmarking exercise has been undertaken with high, per capita consumption, sites targeted. Water audits have been undertaken by MKW, with individual reports compiled on appropriate water efficiency measures that can be cost effectively implemented.

This activity will be widened to include all KCC buildings, parks and grounds during the coming months/years in order to reduce overall consumption by 10% within 3 years.

Online Water Consumption data for Key Customers

WaterMeterMid  Kent Water is committed to providing the highest quality services and  information to our commercial customers.

As part of this ongoing development programme we have invested in new equipment, embracing the latest GSM technology and logger capability.

This will allow virtual real time access to water consumption data. The readings are taken every 15 minutes allowing compilation of meaningful profiles showing both daytime and nightime consumption. The nightime consumption providing the 'nightline' giving a base consumption.

(The nightline is the line on the graph of water consumption that usually indicates lowest water use)

Understanding these profiles, at times of least business activity, allows a better understanding of whether leakage and/or wastage are taking place.

All of this aids a focused approach towards additional water efficiency investment measures in both process and financial terms.

This facility is soon to be available to customers with 'Cello' or Xilog water meters. Should you be interested in registering for this new service or arranging for the installation of a suitable metering system, please contact us through dws@midkent.co.uk.

All Metered Commercial Customers are able to access their historical water consumption data online and are able to view this data as a graph or table. see http://consumption.midkentwater.com

Competition in the Water Industry

On 1st December 2005 Ofwat introduced the next step in wider water competition in England and Wales.  As part of the Water Act 2003 business users using at least 50,000 m3 of water annually can now choose their supplier.  A small number of new suppliers have already emerged and it is expected that more will come into the market in the fullness of time.

Customers in the Mid Kent Water area who are eligible have already been contacted, and further information is available from Mid Kent Water’s web site at www.midkentwater.co.uk/services/index.htm with a link to our Access Code.

Ofwat has also published information for business users at:

Mid Kent Water continues to work closely with all its customers and strives to develop mutually beneficial relationships with business customers.  If you would like to find out more please visit the web site by clicking here.

Air Scouring

Background

The water network is in places over 100 years old and the level of water treatment in those times was not nearly as sophisticated as it is today.  As a consequence and in certain areas there has been a very gradual deposition over the years of small particles of iron and manganese that solidify to form harmless deposits within the network, causing corrosion of the mains.  When the mains experience a change in water pressure or velocity these deposits become disturbed and can sometimes lead to discolouration of the drinking water.

Remedial Actions

MKW has already undertaken a series of major investments in both their treatment works and their network as part of an ongoing maintenance programme in order to improve the quality of water.  These capital investments have been targeted firstly at removing the source of the discolouration problem, through improvements to the treatment capability and secondly, through the systematic cleaning and relining of the trunk main system to retard and prevent any further corrosion of these mains.  Notwithstanding this work, there still remains the legacy of the original particulate deposition within parts of the distribution system that is now the subject of ‘air scour’ cleaning.  The air scouring cleaning programme is now being implemented.

Ongoing Maintenance

Once the air scouring is complete it will then be possible to determine the necessity for any further renovation works in these particular areas.

The Air Scour Process

Air scouring of water mains is an extremely effective ‘non-aggressive’ method of cleaning water mains. From 75mm diameter to 300mm diameter, with typical cleaning lengths ranging from 100 to 1000 metres.

Air scouring works by using filtered ‘oil free’ compressed air, injected into the mains via a hydrant to propel a small volume of water at high velocity.  Air and water are ejected together with any suspended solids from a hydrant at the end of the length being cleaned. This system has the effect of achieving water velocities high enough to carry loose deposits in the water stream.

Air scouring

Provided with a continuous supply of compressed air and water in the right proportions, discrete slugs of water are formed in the main and are driven along at high velocity by the compressed air. It is the slug flow system that enables solids to remain suspended in the water over the long distances being cleaned.

The benefits of air scouring are:

    • More effective at removing loose deposits than flushing
    • Mains up to 300mm in diameter can be cleaned
    • Long lengths (up to 1000m) can be cleaned in one go
    • Mains excavation is not required
    • ·A mixture of air and water penetrates and dislodges material which is unreachable by flushing, proving effective in the removal of animals
    • Shorter purge lengths and higher velocities can be successfully used in the removal of bacteriological slimes
    • More cost effective than swabbing.
